Liverpool have been handed a major blow as one of their midfield targets is heading to Bayern Munich, it has been confirmed.
Schalke director Christian Heidel has confirmed that Leon Goretzka will join Bayern on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract this summer.
The German international was heavily linked with a switch to Anfield, with Jurgen Klopp monitoring the situation for months.
Goretzka was touted as a possible replacement for Emre Can, who seems destined to join Juventus on a free transfer.
“Leon [Goretzka] told us at the start of the week that he wanted to leave the club to join Bayern Munich,” Heidel revealed.
“We regretfully accepted the decision. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge informed us Leon passed his medical yesterday.”
Heidel added the club had done “everything they could to keep Leon” but admitted the club was losing a “very, very good player.”

As for a replacement, Heidel revealed that the club would be patient” “We can’t buy Leon Goretzka as a replacement, otherwise he would have stayed. But we have the second half of the season to consider a solution.”
Schalke head coach Domenico Tedesco also commented on the loss: “We are sad and disappointed to lose Leon the player and the person… There’s no doubt Leon is a key component of the team,” said Tedesco, who added he hoped Schalke fans wouldn’t react negatively to the news.
