Jordan Henderson: Broke news of Brendan Rodgers' sacking to Liverpool squad

Liverpool’s players expected Brendan Rodgers to stay until at least Christmas – and were informed of his sacking by Jordan Henderson.

That is according to the Daily Mail, which says Henderson was asked to pass on the news after Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon had informed Rodgers by telephone.

While the squad are said to have been saddened by the news, they are apparently confident that Jurgen Klopp, who is expected to be unveiled on a three-year contract on Friday, can make “an immediate impact”.

A source told the newspaper: “It was always thought that the owners would wait until Christmas and if they were not in the top six then they would have a decision to make.

“The speculation would not go away but the timing – after a win and a draw – was interesting.

“Jordan was asked to deliver the news.

“There is sadness at the way it worked out with Brendan but an acceptance that it’s football and these things happen.

“There is a belief that the new man can come in and provide an immediate impact.”
