No reserves means a chance to see the Yeovil youngsters

Yeovil Town don’t have a reserve team, we can’t really afford one, the cost of extra players and more matches the pitch can’t really take, make it something that just isn’t necessary.

Tonight sees the last remaining cup competition that Yeovil are in, the highly coveted Somerset Premier Cup, usually a competition that our reserves take part in, but without any reserves, just how many first teamers could join a whole host of academy lads in fighting for some silverware.

The game takes place just three days before a lenghy trip to Hartlepool, and I am convinced that League One will take priority, but we can expect to see some players who maybe havent had much of a chance in the first team.

Richard Martin will play in goal, he has a couple first team games under his belt, but having played second fiddle to Alex McCarthy all season he will relish the chance to play any football.

Andy Lindegaard hasnt really been involved much at all, with his contract running out in the new year, this could be a great chance to show his credentials, the same could also apply to George O’Callagahan, but should a meaningless match against Brislington, (no, I havent heard of them either and I live in the area!) be the one used to judge their ability for League One football?

The biggest name to proabably take part is Stefan Stam, returning from injury and failing to dislodge any of the defenders currently in the team. The dutchman was named the first team captain but quite simply hasn’t had the luck with injuries.

Reputation

Others who have made a small first-team impact could also play, Andy Welsh has spent the last few weeks on the bench, Keiran Murtagh has mainly been restricted to substitute appearences, whilst Scott Murray has been in and out of the side.

The youngsters at the club have a decent reputation in the local area and with Rob Clowes and Rhys Baggridge both making appearences on the bench this term.

This could be a decent chance to see some of the fringe players as well as some of the best youngsters Somerset has to offer – maybe I’m a bit silly, but the Somerset Premier Cup is the only sort of ‘reserve’ football that Yeovil can call on. I suggest we use it wisely and a chance to get to a cup final and piece of silverware never hurt anyone, I wonder where the final will be held… Huish Park probably!

A slightly random blog I know, but there is more to a football club than the first team; Yeovil have produced a fair number of youngsters with some of them going on to play first team football in other league clubs.

Craig Alcock will testify to the benefit of reserve football, he bided his time playing in competitions like the Somerset Premier Cup before rising up to captain the first team.

I’m off to Huish Park tonight and for just a few pounds it could be a window into what Yeovil will have to offer both in the short term and with the academy lads, the long term too.
