Magpies extend lead at top of table

Date published: Wednesday 9th December 2009 10:07

There was little action in the opening stages but Coventry hit the bar twice in a matter of seconds in the 38th minute, first through Leon Best’s rifled shot then and then from Michael McIndoe header.

Then, in first-half stoppage time, Shola Ameobi received the ball 12 yards out, turned Barnett and lashed a shot past Keiren Westwood.

Best struck a well-taken volley straight at Harper 10 minutes after the restart as the hosts sought a way back into a game they had more than matched Newcastle in, but the Magpies always looked capable of scoring another.

And they got it with nine minutes remaining when Nile Ranger converted from close range after a great run and cross from Jose Enrique.
