Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola admitted that Napoli are one of the best teams he has faced in his managerial career after his side’s 2-1 victory.
City continued their winning start in this season’s Champions League with a 2-1 victory over the Serie A club, as Raheem Sterling and Garbbriel Jesus added goals.
Ederson denied the in-form Dries Mertens from the spot in the first half but couldn’t keep out Amadou Diawara’s second-half penalty.
Despite a tense finish at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola felt that his side really showed their character in the performance.
“Napoli are an exceptional side so I was expecting them to be strong after the break. We did OK, but they played very well and made it very difficult for us – it was so complicated.
“Today we beat an incredible team and we had to give an incredible performance to do that,” he added.
The Premier League leaders will travel to Naples in a fortnight to attempt to win and seal qualification to the last 16 of the competition.
Despite the tight game, Guardiola has praise for his City players as they were made to fight for the three points.
He added: “It was an amazing game. Outstanding. Both wanted to play against high pressing. Napoli are one of the best teams I have faced in my career.
“If you are not aggressive without the ball you have no chance to survive. The situation is that we go to the next game and try to win that. We are close but it is not already done. We need one more victory to qualify.”
