Man United ratings: Pogba back in groove, but Juan outshines all

Manchester United were back in Europa League action at Old Trafford on Thursday night. We deliver our verdict on Jose Mourinho’s men.

DAVID DE GEA: Could do nothing to stop Robin van Persie from tucking in from close range on his Old Trafford return 6

MATTEO DARMIAN: Not had much of a look-in at Manchester United this season, but showed plenty of hard work and endeavour down the right-hand side 6.5

ERIC BAILLY: A relatively quiet evening but was very lethargic for Robin van Persie’s consolation goal 6

CHRIS SMALLING: Only played the first 45 minutes and was largely untested up against the returning Van Persie 6

LUKE SHAW: Come under criticism this season but the left-back built a solid platform to build upon over the next few games 6.5

MICHAEL CARRICK: Provided one, if not the highlight of the night with a stunning pass to Mata that resulted in United’s first penalty 7.5

PAUL POGBA: Made a critical Michael Owen look very silly with an eye-catching performance in midfield and two goals to his name. United fans will be hoping there is plenty more where that came from against Chelsea on Sunday 8.5

JESSE LINGARD Constantly buzzed around all the Fenerbahce defence, showed great touch and vision to set-up Pogba’s second goal and scored a cracker himself 8

JUAN MATA: A marvellous performance from the Spanish maestro. A true No.10 display which was capped off wonderfully with a stunning through ball which led to Martial’s penalty 9

ANTHONY MARTIAL Gave the full-back plenty of problems with clever movement inside from the left but was ultimately overshadowed others 7.5

WAYNE ROONEY: A rare return up front for the Manchester United captain. Did not offer much of a goal threat but linked up with his team-mates much better in a more advanced role 7.5

Substitutes:

MARCOS ROJO Not the most-loved Manchester United player by any stretch but did nothing to irk them on this particular occasion 5.5

MEMPHIS DEPAY Tried to get in on the act in the second-half but still waiting for his United career to take off 5

TIMOTHY FOSU-MENSAH Came on for Pogba and tried to impose his power and strength on the United midfield 6
