Manchester United will reportedly rival a move for the United States’ golden boy Christian Pulisic if Liverpool an offer this summer.
Pulisic, 19, is one of the USA’s most promising players in recent years and Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for him.
Pulisic is firmly admired by Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’s American owners are also believed to be fans of the Borussia Dortmund man and all the marketing opportunities that would come with the Pennsylvania-born star.
Former Dortmund boss Klopp piled praise on Pulisic in February 2015, when Pulisic was coming through the ranks at the Bundesliga club and it’s thought the player remains in his thinking.
“We were missing his position and that’s why we called him up,” Klopp said in a press conference. “He did a good job.
“Pulisic is part of that generation. He’s a great footballer, an attacking midfielder. He can kick the ball around really well. And in a very intense training session with narrow spaces, he did not stand out in a negative way. This is a real sign of quality.”
The Independent report that Man Utd’s owners are not prepared to let Pulisic, and all the marketing opportunities in the US that will come with the youngster, slip through their grasp.
The report claims United “strongly challenge” Liverpool if they make a move for Pulisic in the summer.
Liverpool have been tipped to make a concerted effort to get Pulisic at the end of the season.
Respected football journalist Raphael Honigstein told The Totally Football Podcast that he’d be very surprised if Liverpool didn’t come in heavily for Pulisic.
United may try and use Henrikh Mkhitaryan as a makeweight in any prospective deal with Dortmund interested in bringing the Armenian back to the Westfalenstadion.
Dortmund are expected to try and resist all offers for Pulisic, who signed a new deal until 2020 last January.
Last month BVB director Michael Zorc told Reviersport: “Those experts are being paid to talk a lot.
“Sometimes they talk sense, sometimes less so. I don’t care much about that. I prefer to stick to the facts. And thus I see Christian with us in the long-term.”
“We plan ahead with Christian Pulisic. And when I say ahead, I mean beyond this summer. He has a long-term contract and feels at home in Dortmund.”
Pulisic is the jewel in the crown for the US at the moment and he has scored four times in 23 appearances for Dortmund this season after making the breakthrough to the first team in 2015/16.
He was named named the USA Men’s National Team’s Player of the Year by US Soccer in 2017 and in June he ruled out a move to Dortmund’s deadly rivals Bayern Munich.
“No, that I could not do,” Pulisic said of going to Bayern Munich. “I can’t say that, but nah.”
Despite being born in the US Pulisic has dual USA-Croatia citizenship and has been training at the Dortmund Academy since he was 16.
