‘Hard to be too upset’ by Arsenal defeat

Morning Steveo – I surprised myself that I watched the whole thing but considering a serious lack of shots on goal, by either side, it actually wasn’t a bad game. Their penalty was the only real effort on goal that they had and, apart from that, we were totally dominant.

Wilshere was very lively and looking like he might push for a place in the first team soon. Maitland-Niles also looked good and Nketiah gets you excited every time he touches the ball.

All-in-all, considering we made 11 changes from the Spud game and we were already qualified, it’s hard to be too upset over the result.

And I’ll hold my hands up, I was embarrassed that we’re even in this competition and to start off with, really didn’t give a toss how far we got. Now I’m starting to think about the knock-out stages and the fact that Wenger will surely player a stronger side – we have a great chance of our first European trophy since ’94.

Gunners show their ‘true colours’

So just after beating our mighty neighbours and get a few naive gooners wet their pants over it,this team has shown it’s true colours against a bottom of bundesliga team.

Firstly, when you’re going to play so many defenders with two holding midfielders right infront of them who’s basic role is to defend first…then the least you expect our team to keep is a clean sheet.IMO if you’ve conceded that goal then you’ve basically lost. Not only did we concede but we gave a few oppurtunites which they didn’t take.

Wenger’s idea to use this system with those players is so flawed.Chambers at RWB???Maitland niles at LWB?Holding is terrible.Coquelin has forgotten how to play football.Giroud although is a presence, our only real threat of a goal only seemed to come through welbeck who was attack minded. We’ve been getting lucky with the results and now this team has been found out.The teams in our group are laughable, come up against a half decent team and we’ll be slaughtered in this competetion.

I tell you,we should switch back to the old formation. The reason teams use this system is to keep a clean sheet and defend strongly, but our bunch of players aren;t strong enough.

I hope these bunch players who prepare only for midweek games all season and don’t even show their care or dissapointent at the fact that they’ve lost to bottom of the table team are proud of themselves. But is anything else expected, that’s the metnality wenger has set for the club.Wenger out.

Rudiger in for Cahill please

Liverpool going forward are very free flowing and can create something out of nothing with their pace. However, I would argue that they are more of a counter attack team than we are and they really tend to struggle against teams that are compact and deep

I would also start with the same team that won the last 2 league games but with one exception – Rudiger for Cahill due to the pace that Rudiger possesses which may be very useful

I am certain that we will create chances so we need to take them. Fabregas seems to be relishing his new role and Hazard looks to be enjoying his football again as well so I am totally convinced that we will create

Just need to be solid in the middle, composed and alert at the back. I really think we have a great chance at Anfield and feel that they could easily become frustrated quickly if they do not score. If they do, then we simply must not crumble but stick to our philosophy as we have the better players and a better manager than they do. KTBFFH

I think if we turn up for the game there is no doubt we can match them. if Conte tries to play with Liverpool’s strength like he did with City. there is a high chance that we may lose that game. but if Conte focuses on our strengths and plays to that. we have a chance that we may beat them.

i will be disappointed if we are out played and beaten like the City game. the key to this game is if our wingbacks sit back and watch Mane and Salah, our midfielders and attackers could do the damage. no doubt that Hazard and Morata will have their moments.

Cahill is our skipper, he should start

Cahill is our skipper…he starts irrespective of what we think. There’s a school of thought on here indicating that Cahill is slow. However I disagree.

He reads the game well and we have enough pace at the back with Azi and Christiansen. Any defenders will struggle with players that have the pace of Salah and Mane. They’re out and out gas merchants. Reckon if we can win the midfield battle and starve their attackers of quality possession, half the battle is won.

Their defence is far more vulnerable and inconsistent than ours and the likes of Hazard and Morata can wreak havoc if given the desired platform. In rugby union there’s a phrase…dominate upfront, lay a platform and the rest will take care of itself. I cant help feeling that if we can dominate the midfield battle…the same will apply. Game of our PL season thus far. Three points will provide a massive lift at the club and continue our current momentum. What’s that…4 wins on the spin with 4 clean sheets…or is it three?

Anyway my starting 11:

Courtois..Azi..Christiansen..Cahill….Zappa..Alonso..Kante..Bakayoko..Cesc…Hazard…Morata.

In the PL we have won 3 games on the spin without conceding a goal. But if you add the Watford result its 4 on the spin. Also since the Roma result we have had 3 on the spin whilst scoring 9 without reply.

Regarding the Cahill issue, i see the merit of the argument on both sides of the divide. I think i’m sitting somewhere in the middle between the two camps. I do understand the camp that says Cahill should be picked as he has a lot of experience and is our captain. And if we defend in our 18 yrd box, he will be an asset for us. Equally i also undsrstand the camp that says he should be dropped because of tactical. and i won’t be surprised if Conte feels that way. He has done that to Luiz and i see no reason as to why he can’t do it to an other player.

Any way let us hope whoever is picked puts a fight for the shirt. Anfield hasn’t been our happy hunting ground recently. But one cause for optimism is that we haven’t lost Anfield since 2012. The five trips we madw since that had been win 2 and Draw 3.

Ozil won’t fit in at United

Just posted this on the Jan transfer window post in relation to Ozil, don’t think he’ll fit our squad:

The problem with Ozil, and the problem Jose had with him in Madrid (where they almost came to blows) is that Ozil doesn’t expect to have to defend. He sees himself as a Messi type player who should be exempt from tackling and defending because he creates so much.

The situation that arises out of this is, can a team afford to carry a midfielder who doesn’t want to defend? Do you need to play two very defensive minded CM’s to cover for an offensive one who won’t track back?

If we sign Ozil as an offensive CM where does Pogba fit in? He’s a mostly offensive midfielder so do we shift Ozil out to the wing, where he doesn’t want to play? He doesn’t fit into the club as long as we have Pogba in my opinion so why bring him in? It’s the same reason Miki and Mata are playing on the wings instead of centrally where they should be. Pogba fills that role, we need out and out wingers not another ‘No. 10’ or attacking CM that’s going to be pissed off because Pogba is actually playing in their position.

So, as I intimated, the role is that of negotiator because no top manager is going to allow someone else to pick his transfer targets. Mourinho surely wouldn’t allow it. Don’t know what the fella at Citeh does but it’ll be Pep who decides who they sign. That’s why that structure rarely works.

Now scouting’s a different thing altogether and something that’s key in terms of identifying the world’s best young talent before anyone else does. We haven’t been very good at that.

To think that we won titles and even a Champions league, managed to get gems such as Ronaldo, Evra, Vidic, Chicha while we had Duncan Ferguson as our chief scouts says quite a lot about Sir Alex’s brilliance, but also emphasizes what a catastrophic disaster Dinosaur Dave was…..

O.T Fax Machine

Duncan Ferguson didn’t alert us to Ronaldo, Queiroz did. Ronaldo was hardly a hidden gem, he was a high priced upcoming talent like Martial, Depay, Nani, Anderson etc.

Dinasour Dave revamped our scouting system http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/david-moyes-overhauls-manchester-united-6751601 and was praised for it. Then came JM who again revamped the scouting system http://www.espnfc.com/manchester-united/story/2969535/manchester-united-revamp-scouting-system-under-jose-mourinho-source

Problem is part of “revamping” means the manager brings in his own people, who invariably are his pals. This means that if we change manage the staff he brought with him go with him or are not wanted by the next manager.

This is crazy, it means key people from all aspects of the club, coaches, scouting, medical etc. change with manager. And so does any system or practices they implemented.

This is something a DOF should prevent. In my view, the club needs to identify jobs that a manager can bring his people to do (eg his assistant) and those that the club (DOF) hire and fire.
