Manchester United: Off the mark in Europe

Manchester United: Off the mark in Europe

Manchester United recorded the first win in their 2016/17 Europa League campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Ukranian side Zorya.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored with just over 20 minutes left with United’s first shot on target on a dull night at Old Trafford.

How did Jose Mourinho’s men fare?

Sergio Romero: Didn’t really have a lot to do and wasn’t tested often, but did make a good stop to deny Paulinho’s curling effort with the score at 0-0. 7

Timothy Fosu-Mensah: Was substituted off and got a good reception. Looked composed on the ball and that helped the team. 7

Eric Bailly: Won a lot of physical battles in what was not his hardest game, and demonstrated his pace on numerous occasions. 7

Chris Smalling: Was not afraid to venture forward, but another solid night for the England international. 7

Chris Smalling: Insists Rooney will still get games for Man Utd

Marcos Rojo: Was worryingly turned inside out for the opponents’ only real chance, and didn’t look a patch on Luke Shaw. 5

Marouane Fellaini: Looked busy without really doing anything. Lots of sideways movement; not up to Herrera’s level. 5

Paul Pogba: Still hasn’t found the right area to operate within the system. Stuck between trying to force play in the final third, and sitting too deep. 6

Jese Lingard: Wasted two big chances which does not go unnoticed, and was not exactly brilliant with the ball at his feet. 4

Juan Mata: Played a key part in the goal, plus he constantly wanted the ball and looked creative when he had it. Gives Mourinho a real headache. 7

Juan Mata Man Utd

Marcus Rashford: Hit the crossbar with a sweetly struck effort in the first half. Drifted in and out of the game and rarely troubled the Zorya back line. 6

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Bagged a goal that proved to be the winner, but generally found himself out of the danger areas he generally likes to operate. 7

Substitutions

Wayne Rooney: Tallied an assist thanks to a scuff, but cannot deny his impact. 6

Wayne Rooney: Captain has lost his place in Mourinho's side

Ashley Young: Did a solid job after coming on but didn’t ask many questions. 6

Anthony Martial: Didn’t make much impact as United appeared happy to close at 1-0. 6
