Ian Holloway suggests Manchester United should have considered Steve Bruce to replace Louis van Gaal.
Bruce won a record fourth promotion from the Championship as Hull City beat Sheffield Wednesday in the play-off final at Wembley.
And Holloway believes Bruce deserves to be rewarded with a top job, but United have instead opted for three-time Premier League winner and two-time Champions League winner Jose Mourinho.
“It’s an absolutely exceptional record,” Holloway said.
“I know they were talking about Manchester United and who was going to get it, and I know Jose Mourinho did, but seriously, why doesn’t someone like Bruce get considered?
“It’s only a matter of time before people like Steve get appreciated at the top level of this game and just given a chance.”
While Bruce has been promoted four times, the former Birmingham and Sunderland manager has also been relegated twice.
In 2014 the 55-year-old guided Hull to the FA Cup final, where they were beaten by Arsenal, but the Tigers were relegated from the top flight the following campaign, having spent £65million on transfers over two seasons.
