Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is looking to rub salt in the wounds of Chelsea manager Antonio Conte by snapping up James Rodriguez from Real Madrid.
United leapt ahead of Chelsea to land Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, who is expected to complete his £75million switch to Old Trafford over the next 24 hours, and are now reportedly back in the running for Blues target Rodriguez.
The Real attacking midfielder has been a long-term target for United but Chelsea were believed to have become a more likely destination for the 25-year-old until Mourinho renewed his interest, according to the report in the Daily Star.
Rodriguez has spent the last three seasons at the La Liga giants, having joined from Monaco in 2014, but his first-team opportunities have lessened under Zinedine Zidane leading the Colombia international to look at other options this summer.
The player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, also represents Mourinho and that has consistently led to speculation that United would be Rodriguez’s first choice option should he move to England – that is until Chelsea showed a significant interest.
However, it now looks as if Conte will be seething again if one of his main targets chooses a move to Manchester over London – particularly given that Chelsea are the reigning Premier League champions while United could only finish sixth last season, 24 points behind their rivals.
