Anthony Martial is in line to make his full debut for Manchester United in their Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night.
Martial replaced Juan Mata on 65 minutes of United’s stroll past Liverpool on Saturday and within 20 minutes the £36million recruit from Monaco was the darling of the Stretford End after dancing through the visitors’ defence to seal the 3-1 victory.
Louis van Gaal will assess his squad in training on Monday, but With Wayne Rooney still hamstrung and Marouance Fellaini ineffective against Liverpool, the 19-year-old looks set to lead United’s attack in Holland.
“You will have to wait and see how the players recover,” said Van Gaal. “That is the most important thing.
“Three days – because it was an important match – for everybody, also with the pressure, for the result against Liverpool.
“So they need three days to recover. Then I shall decide.”
Louis van Gaal was suitably impressed with his new recruit at the weekend and relieved to see the youngster was able to cope with the physical demands of the Premier League.
“The goal of Anthony, not a bad goal I think!” added Van Gaal.
“It was also a match for him now. He has a lot of space so it was more easy to bring him. But he did it alright. He scored a marvellous goal and I have seen also, physically, he can play in the Premier League.”
Van Gaal also confirmed that Rooney will miss Tuesday’s clash, but is set to return to face Southampton on Sunday.
“I don’t want to take any risks with our captain. He is much too important for our team. So I don’t think he will play against PSV.
“It is a minor injury and I believe that he shall play against Southampton,” said Van Gaal.
