Mata and Mkhitaryan: Can thrive in same team

Juan Mata has insisted that he and Henrikh Mkhitaryan can play in the same side at Manchester United.

Mata began the season firmly in the first-team picture at Old Trafford, starting nine of the club’s first 13 Premier League games.

He dropped to the bench for matches against Everton and Tottenham however, only returning against Crystal Palace due to Mkhitaryan’s injury in the latter game.

Although he joined from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, Mkhitaryan is yet to start a league game with Mata – although they have started two Europa League group games together.

The Spaniard insists he and the 27-year-old are compatible in the same side.

“We are different players and we can play together. We understand each other well on the pitch because we play the same type of football,” he told IBTimes.

“The manager has the decision. He decides what is best for each match.

“But I think we are different players and I am happy for his recent performance because he is a great guy and deserves it.

“I’ve played a lot so far. I’m happy.

“I have scored some goals and I feel good. It is true that there is a big competition but I have always had that during my career and now I am at United, I have to keep fighting.”
