Juan Mata: Linked with West Ham switch

Juan Mata said he appreciated the “special” reception he received from Chelsea fans, but admitted his frustration at Manchester United’s failure to hang on for a victory.

United were set to claim all three points thanks to Jesse Lingard’s brilliant opener, but had to settle for a point after Diego Costa scored in injury-time to ensure a 1-1 draw.

After the draw with his former club, Mata said: “We played very good football to be honest. Coming here to Stamford Bridge and playing the football that we played in the first 30 minutes and in the second half as well.

“We had it so close but in the end Chelsea are always trying to score and create chances and they scored a late goal and we didn’t have any time to try to come back.

“It’s always special to play here.”

Goalscorer Lingard added: “I think we played the majority of the game well. After conceding late on it felt like a defeat but we have to move onto the next game now.”
