Liverpool defender Joel Matip says he cannot wait to hear the fans signing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ at Anfield this weekend.
The central defender joined Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool from Schalke on a free transfer two months ago and he is desperate to make his first home appearance.
Matip started the 5-0 away win at Burton and the draw at Tottenham, but he is relishing his home debut against Leicester City on Saturday.
“I’ve been waiting the whole pre-season to make my first steps at the stadium,” he told the club’s website.
“I think Liverpool is famous for its stadium, for its atmosphere. It will be a great atmosphere and I’ll be happy when I can play there.
“To hear ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ for the first time at the stadium will be a special moment and I will enjoy it.”
The 25-year-old defender was used to hearing Liverpool’s anthem before Schalke’s games away at their rivals Borussia Dortmund.
“At Dortmund I like (You’ll Never Walk Alone) – you can compare them a little bit to Liverpool but it’s not the same.
“Dortmund, sometimes they sing, but they’re not really famous for this, Liverpool is famous for this song and the atmosphere at the stadium. It will be something else.
“It’s a nice song and with the atmosphere, it will be good to hear,” he added.
