Jack Wilshere: Music wars

The £14.7m purchase of Wijnaldum represents Newcastle’s only arrival thus far, but moves for Charlie Austin, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Florian Thauvin have been touted.

Installed as new boss just this summer, McClaren revealed last week that the club are targeting ‘several £10m-plus signings‘.

Currently in the United States with his squad – minus midfielder Cheick Tiote – McClaren now says the club are “close” to making further additions.

“The plans continue and work goes on behind the scenes back home,” the 54-year-old said. “We’re close.

“Wijnaldum comes out tomorrow and that will be good. We’ll get him in with the boys.

“With recruitment we will wait and see.”

The Magpies continue their pre-season campaign with a friendly against Sacramento Republic on Saturday.
