Memphis Depay: Sought assurances from Louis van Gaal

Memphis Depay is reported to have held talks with Louis van Gaal over his future after a disappointing debut season at Manchester United.

The Dutchman moved to Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven for £25million last summer but the 22-year-old has struggled to make an impression in Van Gaal’s XI, having failed to contribute a single assist and scored only two goals in the Premier League.

Ryan Giggs is understood to have taken Depay under his wing, with the winger’s flashy lifestyle said to have caused some concern at Old Trafford, with his form on the pitch failing to match his profile off it.

The Sun claims Depay has sought out Van Gaal for discussions over his future after making only 15 Premier League starts. The report says:

“Although the United manager is prepared to be patient, Van Gaal has told winger to prove to the fans that he is good enough to play for the club.”

Depay’s best form has come in Europe, with the winger scoring five goals and contributing three assists in United’s failed Champions League and Europa League campaigns.

Depay will hope for a chance when United tackle Everton in the FA Cup semi-finals this weekend and the Dutchman is long odds with BetBright to open the scoring in the game.
