Memphis: Party-boy reputation nonsense; let me be me
Memphis Depay has hit out at media reports criticising his lifestyle off the pitch – and has hit back at those who have blasted his choice of attire.
The Manchester United winger has had a slow start to life at Old Trafford, scoring just twice in 13 Premier League appearances, and losing his place in the side in October after finding his work-rate and team ethic coming in for criticism.
He was also recently voted the most disappointing foreign import of the 2015/16 season.
Various reports felt Memphis’ dip in form was due to his fondness for a night on the tiles, but the Dutch forward has denied those claims and has also hit back at criticism of the clothes he wears.
“The funny thing is that since I came to England I’ve only been out one time,” Depay told Algemeen Dagblad. “One time!
“But recently I read that Ryan Giggs had approached me about my reputation as a party boy and stuff. Total nonsense! Completely made up!”
Depay has also received criticism regarding his attire, with pictures showing him to have a rather unique fashion sense.
“Often I think: just let me do this,” the former PSV Eindhoven star added. “Let me wear the clothes I want to wear.
“Why is everyone making such a big deal out of that? What is this all about? Just let me be. I’m just a 21-year-old boy.
“Why should I change? Some people collect postage stamps; I like fashion and discovering new things.
“I feel good doing that. If I would put on what you want me to put on, I wouldn’t be myself anymore.”
