Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp confirmed on Tuesday that Boro’s undisclosed offer had been accepted, but added Shotton would not be leaving St Andrew’s until he had brought in cover.
“The club are dealing with those matters, but he’s a player we’re interested in,” Monk said ahead of Saturday’s game at Nottingham Forest.
Quoted on Middlesbrough’s website, Monk added: “The bid has been accepted and we’d like to get that process done as soon as possible. There’s always speculation, that’s the same at every club, but we’ve got a few positions we’d like to add to.”
Boro paid Forest £15million last month for striker Britt Assombalonga, while Darren Randolph, Ashley Fletcher, Martin Braithwaite, Cyrus Christie and Jonny Howson are also among Monk’s summer signings.
The Teessiders recouped in the region of £10million for Gaston Ramirez following his move to Sampdoria, while Viktor Fischer, Cristhian Stuani, Brad Guzan, James Husband and Alex Baptiste have also left the Riverside Stadium.
