Monaco midfielder Joao Moutinho has admitted he could have easily been a Tottenham player ahead of their Champions League group stage clash.
The Euro 2016 winner was firmly on Andre Villas-Boas’ radar in 2012 when Moutinho was still plying his trade for Porto, but the transfer failed to materialise and a year later he joined the Ligue 1 outfit in a deal thought to be worth €25million.
“It’s true, I was a few minutes from signing for Spurs,” Moutinho told reporters.
“But here I am at Monaco and the focus is on putting in a performance to help us through to the next stage of the Champions League.”
Moutinho then gave his thoughts on how he sees this particular group taking shape as the competition progresses.
“Spurs might be slight favourites but this is a very equal group [which includes Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow].
“Every team will fancy their chances to qualify and everyone wants to get through.”
