Mourinho in transfer admission as he ponders how to cut City gap

Jose Mourinho has suggested Manchester United will only spend within their means this summer after hinting toppling Manchester City will be hard to achieve.

Pep Guardiola’s side have dominated the Premier League this season and will wrap up the title if United were to lose at home to West Brom on Sunday, or on Wednesday against Bournemouth.

And while finishing the season in runners-up spot would represent progress for Mourinho’s side, the club have been linked with a series of big-name summer arrivals in the bid to close the gap on their neighbours next season.

However, Mourinho has tried to temper expectations over Manchester United’s summer business and has played down claims of an enormous spending spree.

And he suggested that City will be tough to overtake given their unlimited pot of funds.

“We are not going to spend more than we can, we are not going to do anything crazy,” he said.

“Hopefully we finish second this season and then next time we can try and improve on that.

“I’m sure all the other team in the top six feel the same, but let’s see what happens.

“Maybe Manchester City will also invest massively and not let any of the others close the gap.”

As if to exemplify the spending capabilities between the two sides, Sunday’s Paper Talk suggested United were keen to sign £50million Leicester defender Harry Maguire, while Manchester City were poised to bring in Kylian Mbappe, Thiago Alcantara and Matthijs de Ligt for a total of £275million.
