Ryan Giggs: Exit discussed by Mourinho on Tuesday

Ryan Giggs was ‘shocked’ by Jose Mourinho’s claims that the Welshman was offered a senior coaching position at Manchester United, according to reports.

At his unveiling as Manchester United boss on Tuesday, Mourinho fielded questions about former assistant manager Giggs, who left the club after 29 years earlier this week.

Giggs was one of the leading contenders to replace Louis van Gaal when the Dutchman’s position came under intense scrutiny last season, but the 42-year-old was overlooked for the ex-Chelsea boss.

“It’s not my responsibility that Ryan is not in the club,” Mourinho said on Tuesday. “The job Ryan wanted was the manager’s job. And the club decided that was the job for me.

“Ryan wants to be a manager. He could have had any position. The manager wanted to give him any position in the club.

“He was brave. He was honest so good luck to him. If he wants to come back when I’m here, I will always say yes.”

According to The Times, it is Mourinho’s claim that Giggs “could have had any position in the club” that has ‘angered’ the Welshman.

‘Mourinho is understood not to have spoken to the Welshman about a position on his staff before Giggs announced his departure from United on Saturday, despite the Portuguese’s position being confirmed a month ago.

‘Giggs is said to have told United that, despite his ambitions to become manager and his disappointment not to get the top job, he was willing to finish his apprenticeship under a man of Mourinho’s stature.’

Paul Hirst and Matt Dickinson add that United ‘had only ever talked of a vague development with no first-team responsibilities’ with Giggs, according to friends of the Welshman.
