Jose Mourinho has reportedly told Phil Jones he can be like John Terry was for him at Chelsea after assuring the defender of his future at Manchester United.
The £30million signing of Eric Bailly from Villarreal earlier this month looked to have clouded Jones’ future at Old Trafford, but new United chief Mourinho is a big admirer of the versatile Jones and has told the player he is definitely in his plans for next season.
Jones was beset by injuries last season, making just 13 appearances for United and missing out on England’s Euro 2016 squad.
The 24-year-old signed a new four-year contract at Old Trafford in June 2015, but numerous ankle problems and a blood clot in his calf meant he only started six Premier League games last season.
But the Daily Mirror says Mourinho has faith in Jones, despite his injury woes, and claimed “he can be like Terry was for him at Chelsea”.
Mourinho last week requested a meeting with Jones to clear up the defender’s future at Old Trafford with Goal claiming the Portuguese boss was intent on keeping the versatile player at the club and Saturday’s report has reinforced that theory.
Jones’ last United appearance came on January 2 with Dutch utility player Daley Blind filling in at centre-back under Louis van Gaal last season, but Mourinho is keen on Jones’ versatility with the player playing in a whole host of positions including centre-back, right-back and holding midfield since arriving from Blackburn in 2011 for around £16.5million.
