Gary Neville has admitted that he underestimated Ander Herrera’s ability and character when he first joined Manchester United.
The Spaniard moved to Old Trafford from Athletic Bilbao for a reported €36 million in 2014 and has grown into his role at the club, becoming an integral member of the starting XI this season.
And Neville has revealed that he wrote off the 27-year-old when he first appeared in England after the midfielder failed to impress the former defender with his performances.
“When he first came, no way in this world did I think he was a United player,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“I thought he was too nice and didn’t look particularly brilliant. But in the last six or seven months there’s been a huge shift in his personality.
“He looks like a fighter and if there’s a job to be done, it’s him doing it.
“He’s better defensively than he gets credit for.
“He’s applied himself to local life and the fans and that is a huge plus for him.”
