Newcastle fail to re-sign Liverpool left-back Enrique

Jose Enrique: Ends five years at Liverpool

Newcastle have been foiled in their attempt to re-sign Jose Enrique after failing to agree personal terms with the left-back Enrique.

Despite a productive January, in which they have signed Jonjo Shelvey, Henri Saivet, Andros Townsend and Seydou Doumbia, Newcastle are desperately short at left-back.

Having missed out on La Liga duo Guilherme Siqueira and Lucas Orban, as well as former player Davide Santon, Steve McClaren had hoped to persuade Enrique to return to St James’ Park.

The 30-year-old is out of contract in the summer and Liverpool are willing to allow the out-of-favour full-back to depart.

However, the move was dependent on all three parties agreeing a financial compromise, as Enrique earns around £70,000 a week on Merseyside.

The Spaniard now appears certain to see out the remainder of the season at Liverpool, where he has only started twice this term, while the Magpies are now left in a race against time to reinforce their defence.
