Midfielder Yohan Cabaye could return to the Newcastle squad for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Fulham.

Manager Alan Pardew has told the 27-year-old he expects him to be available for the first time this season as the Magpies brace themselves for an improved bid from Arsenal.

Striker Loic Remy, the club’s only senior signing to date this summer, could be involved from the bench after recovering from the calf problem he had when he signed from QPR, but midfielder Cheick Tiote (groin) will miss out as he joins Jonas Gutierrez (knee) and suspended defender Steven Taylor on the sidelines.

Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg is set to miss out with the shoulder injury he picked up in the 1-0 win over Sunderland on the opening day.

Fernando Amorebieta’s debut remains on hold as the summer signing is still struggling with an injury whilst Kieran Richardson is still a long-term absentee with a hamstring problem.

John Arne Riise is set to continue at left-back while Alexander Kacaniklic could be included in the squad following making a return from injury during the midweek Capital One Cup win at Burton Albion.

Newcastle central defender Mike Williamson is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury in Thursday night’s 2-1 Carling Cup victory at Scunthorpe, while keeper Steve Harper will miss out with a knee problem and striker Shola Ameobi could be limited by a hip injury.

Fulham pair Bobby Zamora and John Arne Riise are doubts for Sunday’s clash.

The England international striker missed Thursday night’s Europa League play-off against Dnipro with an ankle injury and is rated 50-50 for the match at St James’ Park.

Riise was forced off with a groin problem on Thursday and has had a scan, while Simon Davies faces a further five months out with a knee injury.

Fulham have no fresh injury concerns for the trip to the North-East.

Mexican defender Carlos Salcido remains sidelined for more than a fortnight with ankle ligament damage.

The Cottagers will also be missing defender Chris Baird (thigh) but he could return for next weekend’s match against Manchester City.

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton will miss out as he begins his three-match ban.

The 28-year-old accepted his suspension after admitting a Football Association charge of violent conduct.

Manager Chris Hughton has been dealt a further blow by the absence of Ryan Taylor, who would have been one of the candidates to replace Barton, with an ankle injury.

Shola Ameobi will undergo a late fitness test of the hamstring he damaged during the midweek defeat by Blackburn, while James Perch will hope to shake off an ankle problem and Leon Best (also ankle) is back in training.

Steve Harper (shoulder), Hatem Ben Arfa (double leg fracture) and Dan Gosling (knee) remain on the casualty list.
