Chelsea are ready to pinch Virgil Van Dijk from under the noses of Liverpool, while Watford have made an enquiry about Alberto Moreno, all in today’s papers.
CHELSEA IN FOR VAN DIJK
The news Liverpool did not want to hear. Chelsea are preparing to challenge them for the signature of Virgil van Dijk.
Antonio Conte has already landed centre-back Antonio Rudiger, but he is prepared to offer Southampton £50million for the Holland defender, report The Times.
The Blues targeted Van Dijk in January and Conte has now persuaded the club to make a firm bid as Chelsea hope to exploit Liverpool’s poor relations with the Saints.
Southampton threatened to report Liverpool to the Premier League over an illegal approach for Van Dijk and the Reds were forced to back away from any prospective deal, but they remain interested and are hopeful the player will submit a formal transfer request.
Van Dijk, 26, is training on his own and does not want to play for Southampton, while the club insist he will not be sold, to Liverpool anyway.
The defender will not be involved in the club’s first Premier League match of the season at home to Swansea next Saturday due to a lack of match fitness and a desire to move on.
WATFORD CHASE MORENO
Watford have made an enquiry about Liverpoo full-back Alberto Moreno, according IBTimes UK.
Hornets boss Marco Silva wants competition for Jose Holebas, 33, and he is understood to have an interest in Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs, but Spaniard Moreno is top of his wanted list.
Liverpool have slapped a £15million price tag on the full-back after rejecting a bid of £11million from Napoli earlier in the summer and that may prove to be a stumbling block for Watford.
Silva has added five players to his squad since replacing Walter Mazzarri, with Kiko Femenia (Alaves), Tom Cleverley (Everton), Will Hughes (Derby) Daniel Bachmann (Stoke) and Nathaniel Chalobah (Chelsea) all arriving, while Brazil U20 forward Richarlison is also set to arrive from Fluminense, although he may well be loaned out immediately.
