Chelsea are chasing Alessandro Florenzi, Diego Costa faces a retrospective three-match ban, while Marcos Rojo held talks with Louis van Gaal.
CHELSEA LINE UP FLORENZI DEAL
Chelsea are eyeing Roma defender Alessandro Florenzi as a possible successor to Branislav Ivanovic.
Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb claim the right-back is on Jose Mourinho’s radar and could be signed for £16.6million as he bids to replace the Serbian, who has struggled in the opening weeks of the season.
Ivanovic was dropped for last week’s Champions League win over Maccabi Tel Aviv, but returned to the side for Saturday’s 2-0 win over Arsenal where he was made captain for the day.
Chelsea reportedly sent scouts to watch the 24-year-old in the Champions League last week and he didn’t disappoint with a stunning strike against Barcelona.
COSTA COULD RECEIVE RETROSPECTIVE BAN
Diego Costa could receive a retrospective three-match suspension from the FA after his antics during Chelsea’s victory over Arsenal on Saturday, reports the Daily Express.
The Spanish striker was key to the Blues’ win, playing a major role in the sending off of Arsenal defender Gabriel just before half-time. Although Mike Dean failed to punish Costa at Stamford Bridge, the forward will face punishment if the referee’s report is referred to the FA’s video panel for further scrutiny.
Much of the discussion post-game has surrounded Costa, with Arsene Wenger accusing Dean of being ‘naive’ in his dealings with the 26-year-old, while Jose Mourinho hailed Costa as the man of the match at Stamford Bridge. According to the Express however, Costa is set for either a ‘slap on the wrist’ or a ban for his misdemeanors.
ROJO RESCUED HIS MAN UNITED CAREER
Marcos Rojo held ‘crunch talks’ with Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal in order to rescue his career at Old Trafford, reports the Daily Star.
Rojo had fallen out with the Dutchman after the defender’s passport problems meant he had to miss out on United’s pre-season tour of the United States this summer, with the Argentinian then offered to Monaco as part of the deal which saw Anthony Martial signed for £36.7million.
But Rojo, along with his agent Jorge Mendes, held talks with Van Gaal recently, and the boss assured the 25-year-old that he remained part of his plans. Of course, with Luke Shaw’s devastating broken leg, Rojo remains one of few capable alternatives at left-back in the meantime.
