Paper Talk: Liverpool plan ambitious £140m triple swoop

Gianluigi Donnarumma

Liverpool have been linked with a triple swoop for £140m worth of talent, while Arsenal hope to fix their defensive woes by swooping for Porto’s defensive lynchpin, according to Tuesday’s newspapers.

LIVERPOOL LOOKING TO MAKE TRANSFER STATEMENT

Liverpool are attempting an audacious swoop for three players they hope will further strengthen their new-found defensive resolve.

The Reds finished the season with the fourth-best defensive record in the Premier League in 2017/18, but had the season started 10 matches in, Liverpool would have had the best.

Their new-found defensive steel was hugely helped along by the £75m January arrival of Virgil van Dijk, but Jurgen Klopp knows he will need to further strengthen his backline if the club are to mount a push for the Premier League title next season.

As such, the Daily Mirror reckons Liverpool are now ready to make AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma their new No 1 goalkeeper target and will spend up to £70million to land the young Italian.

A clause in Donnarumma’s contract allows him to leave Milan after they failed to qualify for the Champions League and Klopp believes the goalkeeper is more obtainable than Alisson Becker at Roma.

Liverpool have also reportedly targeted swoops for Newcastle defenders Jamaal Lascelles and James Tarkowski, according to the Independent.

The duo are rated at around £35million apiece and are seen as cover and competition for both Van Dijk and, more likely, Dejan Lovren.

Although Liverpool would unlikely sign both, the addition of all three players, including Donnarumma, the papers seem to think the triple deal would set the Champions League finalists back a cool £140m.
