Manchester United have made a firm enquiry for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while one of his Borussia Dortmund team-mates is the subject of a transfer tug-of-war between Arsenal and Chelsea, according to the morning papers.
UNITED MAKE AUBAYMEYANG APPROACH
Manchester United have registered solid interest in £70m-rated Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ahead of the summer transfer window, reports the Daily Mail.
The Borussia Dortmund striker has been a revelation this season and is being chased by a host of European giants, including Real Madrid and Chelsea.
Thomas Tuchel is worried about a potential dismantling of his Dortmund squad, with midfielder Ilkay Gundogan on his way to Manchester City and central defender Mats Hummels’ future up in the air.
United are keen to pounce on that uncertainty, with Aubameyang holding a desire to play in both England and Spain – even though he is already 26.
Bursting onto the scene St Etienne, he has always wanted to play in each of Europe’s top five leagues.
Louis van Gaal’s job remains precarious but any change in management would not affect United’s pursuit of the Gabon international.
He has scored 34 goals in 41 games for Dortmund this campaign, with ex-boss Jurgen Klopp also keen on taking him to Liverpool.
Real Madrid remain the likeliest destination for Aubameyang, who revealed last month he made a personal family promise regarding the Galacticos.
He said: ‘Real Madrid? There is no agreement but I promised my grandfather I would play there one day.
‘Why wouldn’t I want to discover new things? As I’ve said several times, I’d like to play in Spain and have good weather for once in my life!’
United, though, are light on attacking options and want to land a big name to appease supporters after a difficult campaign at Old Trafford.
They have watched Aubameyang since the striker netted against Arsenal in the Champions League two years ago.
He recently broke the record for number of goals scored in a single Bundesliga season by an African, once held by Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse.
ARSENAL JOIN RACE TO SIGN MKHITARYAN
Meanwhile, Aubameyang might not be the only Dortmund player heading for the Premier League this summer after the Daily Mirror reported Arsene Wenger has joined the chase for Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Attacking midfielder Mkhitaryan – who is also a reported target for Liverpool – has made it clear he fancies a move to London after being spotted property hunting in the capital – and that could set up a straight fight for his services between Chelsea and Arsenal.
Dortmund fear they may lose the 27-year-old this summer and the German media have reported that several Premier League clubs have made enquiries.
It was reported earlier this week that Chelsea, who unlike the Gunners cannot offer the player Champions League football next season, are interested in Mkhitaryan and have made enquiries as he only has one year left on his contract with the Bundesliga heavyweights.
The Armenia international nearly joined Liverpool from Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk three years ago but went to Dortmund instead in a £25m move, largely because they could provide him with Champions League football right away.
Mkhitaryan is still keen on a move to England and is the sort of stellar signing that Arsenal are looking for as another season of early promise ends without the title.
