Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been linked with a shock move to Newcastle – despite previously stating that he would never sign for the Black Cats’ deadly rivals.
The 23-year-old is likely to leave Sunderland this summer, following their relegation from the top flight, and that has led to speculation that the England squad member could head to Rafael Benitez’s men, who are heading in the opposite direction.
Pickford, however, is likely to have a host of clubs chasing his signature, with the Sunderland Echo claiming that big guns Manchester City and Arsenal are also keen on the outstanding stopper.
But what about Pickford’s chances of moving to St James’ Park? Well according to an interview he did last month on Sky Sports, the youngster suggested that he would never follow former team-mate Jack Colback in crossing the Tyne-Wear divide.
“Jack’s playing on the other side of the water these days unfortunately,” said Pickford. “I would never do that.
“I couldn’t do it myself. I would never go to Newcastle. [Leaving Sunderland] is not something I’ve looked at yet and it’s not something I want to look at either.”
