Mauricio Pochettino has warned Tottenham to keep their feet on the ground despite their 14-match unbeaten run and insists it’s “too early to start talking about the title”.
Spurs face Newcastle at White Hart Lane on Sunday, with Magpies boss Steve McClaren claiming Pochettino’s men will be serious contenders for the Premier League title if they don’t allow their Europa League campaign to distract them.
Tottenham, who have not lost in the Premier League since the season’s first day at Old Trafford, are just three points off a Champions League spot and six behind surprise leaders Leicester.
But Pochettino is not falling for McClaren’s flattery, saying: “I respect his opinion, but we need to show respect to the opposition and the competition because we are very ambitious.
“After 14 games unbeaten we need to stay on the same level and it is too early to speak about winning the title – achievements come at the end of the season, not in December.
“If we start to speak about challenging for objectives at the end of the season, maybe we will be spending energy on things that are not important today.
“We need to keep our feet on the ground and you have to remember we are a very young team.
“We expect a very tough game against Newcastle – they had a great victory against Liverpool last week and it is a very dangerous game for us.
“We need to be ready to have the same motivation and quality we showed against Monaco.”
