The 29-year-old has scored 61 goals in the last three seasons for his hometown club and was the subject of interest from Millwall and Barnsley at the end of last summer.

Pope must now decide whether to extend his stay at Vale, who could only manage an 18th-placed finish in League One this term.

Other players considering fresh terms are Adam Yates, Chris Birchall, Louis Dodds, Ben Williamson, Sam Johnson, Michael O’Connor, Michael Brown, Mark Marshall, Frederic Veseli, Ryan Lloyd, Ryan Boot and Nathan Smith.

Manchester City academy graduate Alex Nimely has been released along with Chris Robertson and Kaid Mohamed while Tommy O’Sullivan, Neill Collins and Mohamed Coulibaly have returned to their parent clubs.
