Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Liverpool could soon open new contract talks with homegrown talent Jon Flanagan – but admits he’s simply glad to see the defender finally back in action.
The full-back has endured a nightmare 18 months with injury – but finally looks to be coming through the other side having made his comeback for the Reds over the past month.
Newspaper reports on Tuesday morning suggested the Reds were prepared to offer Flanagan a new deal and Klopp, at his media briefing to preview Wednesday’s match with Manchester City, was asked if would give the player a new contract.
“I would. I really would,” Klopp responded. “Of course we are thinking about it. But the best news is that Flanno is back. After a long time [sidelined] you have to be careful.
“Hopefully at the end we can find a positive solution for both sides.”
Klopp admitted Liverpool were not pushing the player too hard as he continues his step-up after having his knee reconstructed.
“After a game, he needs one or two days to recover,” Klopp said. “That is not easy for him. Flanno is our boy and we will do everything to come together and hopefully it’s a positive solution on this side.
“There will be a few talks and we will see what will happen.”
