Chelsea and Manchester United target Gonzalo Higuain is set to be offered a new contract at Napoli after firing them into the Champions League.
Higuain blasted a hat-trick in a 4-0 rout of Frosinone on Saturday to set a new all-time record of 36 goals in a single Serie A season. And the 28-year-old Argentina frontman was understandably in high spirits.
“I feel immense joy at overtaking this record,” Higuain told Mediaset.
“But I need to thank a lot of people, from my family to all the people of Napoli, the players and the medical staff.
“I feel very proud, because everyone helped me to achieve this feat. I knew I could do it, but I had to stay calm. In the first half, I didn’t manage to but in the second I did.”
The Premier League pair have been tracking the striker’s progress this season, while Gianluca DiMarzio.com claim Ligue 1 side PSG are also believed to be readying a bid for Higuain.
Napoli want to keep him and all the indications from Italy are that they will offer him a new £6million-a-year deal with two years to run on his existing contract.
The striker has a huge £74million release clause written into his contract, although that will reportedly be lowered if he agrees to an extention at San Paolo stadium.
Italian outlet La Repubblica earlier this year claimed Napoli have prepared a two-year extension to his current deal £4.3million-a-year deal. And now with a record-breaking season behind him and Champions League football secured the former Real Madrid man is set to pledge his future to the Naples club.
Last month Argentina legend Diego Maradona wanted Napoli to sell Higuain and sign Harry Kane from Tottenham.
