Nicky Maynard scored twice to maintain his good run of goalscoring form and move Alex three points clear of fourth-bottom Gillingham.

In the seventh minute Maynard turned defenders on the edge of the penalty area and smashed a right-footed drive in off the far post and after 57 minutes he won a chase for a long ball with Yeovil defender Terrell Forbes and lobbed advancing keeper Steve Mildenhall.

Yeovil also needed the points as victory would have almost secured their place in the division and they are now in trouble.

Although Yeovil attacked for most of the second half it was without conviction and in the 90th minute Tom Pope rounded off a good afternoon’s work for Crewe with a close-range tap-in.
