Ray Wilkins believes proposed new Chelsea recruit Tiemoue Bakayoko will be a waste of money.
Chelsea are widely reported to be closing in on £35.2million move for the Monaco midfielder, but former Chelsea player and assistant boss is not happy with the deal.
Instead Wilkins believes Antonio Conte should be putting his faith in English talent and says 22-year-old England Under-21 star Nathaniel Chalobah is a better option for the Blues.
Wilkins told talkSPORT: “I was really disappointed to read they are looking at Bakayoko from Monaco. He is 22 years of age, French and doesn’t get near the national side, but it was quoted Chelsea might be paying £32million.
“Well, in Nathaniel (Chalobah) they have got a footballer that can play exactly the same but just needs an opportunity to get in there and play.
“You have seen already in the two games he has played up to now [at the European Championship] he looks a class act in and amongst people of his own age. Playing with the top quality players that they have at Chelsea, he can only improve week to week.”
Bakayoko, who arrived from Rennes in 2014, starred in the holding role for Monaco last term as they won the French league and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
RMC Sport claim Bakayoko is expected to sign a five-year contract and will arrive in London early next week to undergo his medical.
Chalobah meanwhile, who made just 15 appearances last season for Chelsea, could be set for yet another loan spell after time at Watford, Reading, Burnley, Nottm Fotest and Napoli in recent seasons.
