Harry Redknapp: Bizarre claims

Wayne Rooney could have an impact at Arsenal or Chelsea if he leaves Manchester United, according to Harry Redknapp.

The bizarre claims were aired by the 69-year-old Redknapp in his Evening Standard column.

Redknapp, who is currently the manager of Jordan, has tipped Rooney, 30, to leave United, and says the Red Devils skipper could still have a “major impact at a Premier League club”.

Redknapp wrote: “Wayne Rooney won’t take not playing at Manchester United for much longer. That situation is going to come to a head sooner rather than later if he doesn’t get back in the team.

“He would be a great signing for a couple of seasons and could have a major impact on a Premier League club. He could tip the balance for a top-four team if United were to let him go.

“I’d take Wayne at Arsenal or Chelsea and he has to play as a No9 or 10 – midfield isn’t for him yet.

“Wayne loves playing football more than anyone I’ve ever seen. I know he earns a fortune but he has always reminded me of a kid in the school ground just wanting to play.

He’s suffered with his form and I hope he revives himself at Old Trafford but if not a change of scenery could do him good,” added Redknapp.

Rooney has been left out of the first team by Jose Mourinho after a woeful start to the campaign, triggering speculation that his time may be up at Old Trafford.

He did though start for England in the 2-0 win over Malta – caretaker boss Gareth Southgate’s first game in charge – but he was poor and did little to dampen talk that he is finished at the top level.

Whether he will start away in Slovenia on Monday is open to debate, but he will almost certainly have to settle for a watching brief when United tackle Liverpool next weekend.

But as for making an impact at Arsenal or Chelsea, that seems way off the mark.
