Brendan Rodgers and Jose Reina: Endured a difficult relationship at Liverpool

Former Anfield goalkeeper Pepe Reina says he hopes to “see the old Liverpool come back” after Brendan Rodgers was sacked as manager.

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group removed Rodgers from his role as manager after Sunday’s Merseyside Derby draw with Everton, with Jurgen Klopp hotly-tipped to replace him.

Club favourite Reina made his thoughts clear via his Twitter account.

“I will always be a fan and all I want now is to see the old Liverpool come back for the players and the supporters who deserve the best. YNWA,” said Reina.

The Spaniard endured a difficult time under Rodgers after previously starring as Liverpool’s first-choice keeper from his signing in 2005 until 2013.

Rodgers utilised Reina in his first season as manager at Anfield, but signed Simon Mignolet the following summer with Reina demoted to back-up.

Reina was then loaned out to Serie A side Napoli, upon which he angered Rodgers by saying: “‘Although it was not my decision to leave I will accept it just like I have always accepted any decision that Liverpool have taken for me.”

Upon his return to the club, Reina, who won the FA Cup with Liverpool in 2006, was quickly sold to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
