England fans have voted on the striker they most want to see leading the line in the Euro 2016 opener against Russia on June 11 – with Marcus Rashford given a huge thumbs down.
Who England manager Roy Hodgson selects for Three Lions’ opening Euro 2016 group game will continue to be a huge talking point until the moment the starting XI is announced on the day itself.
But thanks to a pair of 90min polls, fans have already had their say on they want to see leading the line this summer, as well as who they want to see deployed in wide areas supplying the ammunition.
More than 20,000 votes were cast as supporters chose the individual they want to see be the attacking focal point of the team. The identity of the winner is rather unsurprising, although it’s possibly a lot closer than you might expect.
Harry Kane topped the poll, with 32% choosing the Tottenham man after another exceptional season in the which resulted in him becoming the first Englishman in 16 years to receive the Premier League Golden Boot.
Leicester’s Jamie Vardy is relatively new to the international stage, but deserves his place in the squad after guiding the Foxes to the title with 24 goals of his own. He got 25% of the fan vote to lead the line for England this summer, but that was actually less than Daniel Sturridge.
The Liverpool striker got 26%, despite only returning to fitness in the latter half of the domestic campaign after spending the best part of the previous 18 months on the sidelines. He couldn’t command a regular place at club level, but more than a quarter of England fans are behind him.
Wayne Rooney, who is likely to be deployed in a deeper role by Hodgson anyway, only took 9% of the vote. His young Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford, despite his debut heroics on Friday night against Australia, is the primary choice for just 8% of fans.
When it comes to who England supporters want on the wings to provide service, there was a more clear favourite. Just under 17,500 people voted on which pair of wide-men they want to see start for the Three Lions and the obvious choice was Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana with 47%.
The duo, who were team-mates at Liverpool last season, each offer very different threats, with Sterling about electric pace and Lallana more technically gifted. Together they were more favourable to fans than a pairing of Sterling with Andros Townsend, or Lallana with Townsend, which took 24% and 29% of the vote respectively.
