John Arne Riise says Liverpool need to sign a “proper No. 9” and believes Daniel Sturridge should be moved on.
Riise, 36, who had a seven-year spell at Anfield from 2001 and made 234 appearances, believes Jurgen Klopp’s squad needs some major surgery this summer as they prepare for a season in the Champions League.
The former Norway international says Klopp has some work to do in a bid to form a squad which is strong enough to compete in Europe as well as the Premier League.
And Riise thinks Sturridge, who made just seven Premier League starts last season, would be better suited by moving on depsite having two years left on his Liverpool contract.
“We need a new centre-back, a new central midfielder and a new striker who can score 25 goals a season,” said Riise, ahead of the Liverpool v Arsenal Masters in Singapore, via ESPN.
“We have (Roberto) Firmino and (Philippe) Coutinho but we don’t have a proper No. 9.
“Daniel Sturridge is a good player but he probably does not fit Klopp’s style, so it may be good for him to move on.
“Last season [Liverpool] were close to the top at Christmas but lost three to four games thereafter. It shows that we don’t have a big enough squad.”
