It was the Iron’s 10th away game without a victory and to make matter worse it came at the home of their rivals.
Nathan Tyson scored a hat-trick while Niall Canavan’s own goal and former Iron defender Rob Jones were also on the score sheet in a 5-2 victory for Rovers.
Andy Butler’s own goal and a striker from Hakeeb Adelakun were all Robins’ men could muster in response.
Robins said ” We’ve had over 1500 of our own fans here and it’s disappointing to lose to our local rivals like that.
” I wish I could give them half the players’ wages because we only gave them half a game.
“It was an interesting performance as well from my point of view because the players were talking before about finishing the season strongly. But talk is cheap and they haven’t done that.”
Robins took over the reins in October when Scunthorpe were in the bottom four and he has lifted them to a 16th-place finish.
He added: “We have to take stock of the season as a whole and we’ve done the job we came in to do and achieved our objective.
“It’s been tough but enjoyable overall but I hate losing like we did.
“Next season we have to do better and I think there is a great opportunity here to do that.
“It’s important to make the right decisions moving forward but I think the future looks very promising.”
It was Doncaster’s first win in six home games and manager Paul Dickov said: “It’s pleasing but a little bit frustrating as well because our home performances can drive you nuts at times.
“The game probably summed up our season because we played some really good football at times but there were lapses of concentration as well when they scored.
“We seemed to switch off for 20 minutes after half-time but we sorted that out and I was really pleased with the five goals we scored.
“Our home form has not been good so it was a great way to end the season. As a whole we’ve been too inconsistent and I think that’s something we need to address in the summer.
“Nathan deserved his hat-trick because he’s worked his socks off the whole season and it was a good way to sign off for him.”
