Wayne Rooney says it is a “huge deal” for him to play for Everton as he scored the only goal of the game as they beat Stoke City 1-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Toffees striker swapped Manchester United for Merseyside over the summer on a free transfer after 13 years away from Everton.

And Rooney revealed that emotions ran high when he converted a free header into the net in first-half injury time.

“On a personal level scoring the winning goal at Goodison Park is a special moment,” Rooney said. “It doesn’t get much better.

“To play for this club is a huge deal for me. The early games in the season are always tough because you are always finding your rhythm in games.

“We’ve got some tough games coming up so it’s important we got off to a good start.”
