Roy proud of unbeaten record

Wayne Rooney’s late winner handed England a sixth straight Euro 2016 qualifying win and put them on the brink of securing their place in next summer’s tournament in France.

England went 10 matches without defeat this season, winning eight and drawing two but Hodgson insists they can make further improvements.

“We’re really proud to have equalled the record,” he said.

“We’re especially proud because these games have come in June. They are traditionally not the best of games for players to concentrate and put all thoughts of a long season out of their minds and to really focus with their England hats on.

“If anything, that’s the most satisfying thing for me. I selected 24 players and got 24. Each and every training session was top quality and they had top work ethics.

“Then to come out on the field and go a goal behind but still show the character and the team spirit to come back again, they’re the type of things we hope going forward will make us a better team.

“We’ve got a year to work on our play so that come next summer we’re an even better team than we are today.”

Jack Wilshere played an instrumental part in England’s victory scoring two stunning second-half goals but Hodgson was impressed with the Arsenal midfielder’s overall display.

“We’re delighted for him,” said Hodgson.

“I was just pleased with Jack’s general play, especially in the second half when he took control of the game. But to blast two unstoppable shots from outside the box past a goalkeeper of Handanovic’s quality was good.

“That will be good for Jack.”

Hodgson also was full of praise for England captain Wayne Rooney after he went level with Gary Lineker in England’s all-time goalscoring chart on 48.

“He worked unbelievably hard,” the England boss said.

“His target play was excellent. He held the ball up well. He competed well and he worked unbelievably hard defensively.

“But by his high standards he didn’t have his best game in the penalty box in front of goal. So I was really pleased that he got his reward because of his persistence.”
