German referee Deniz Ayteki led the players off the field in the 67th minute after a brawl broke out between both sets of players following a missed penalty by Russia’s Roman Shirokov.

Play had already been suspended in the Monenegrin capital of Podgorica for 30 minutes in the first half after Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was struck on the head by a flare thrown from the stands just eight seconds into the game.

A UEFA statement read: “The CEDB (UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body) has decided to declare the above-mentioned match as forfeited. As a consequence, the Football Association of Montenegro (FSCG) is deemed to have lost the game 3-0.

“In addition, the FSCG has been ordered to play its next two UEFA competition matches as host association behind closed doors. The second match to be played behind closed doors is deferred for a probationary period of two years. Finally, the association has been fined €50,000.”
