Sam Allardyce doubts any midfielder has given a better performance than Jan Kirchhoff this season but the Sunderland boss admits his team are in “big trouble”.
Wahbi Khazri and Lamine Kone made impressive debuts during the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City but it was Jan Kirchhoff, who suffered a nightmare first appearance for the Black Cats as a central defender at Tottenham, who starred in a defensive midfield role.
Manager Sam Allardyce said: “I don’t know anybody who has played as well as that in centre-midfield this season for anybody, whether it be Everton, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and certainly Manchester City today.
“He played that well that they changed to a three and tried to block it up at half-time because we were dominating them, and we were dominating them because of Jan’s quality of passing and his quality of finding space.
“I have to say it was up there as one of the top performances of any midfielder for any team.”
Sunderland lost the game 1-0 with Allardyce admitting: “While this performance was the best since I’ve been here, we’re in big trouble now when you look at the other results.”
