Marcus Rashford missed out on the 2016 European Golden Boy award, finishing second to former Manchester United target Renato Sanches.
Bayern Munich midfielder Sanches follows in the footsteps of the likes of Wayne Rooney, Mario Balotelli and Paul Pogba in winning the gong, which is award to the best player under the age of 21.
Anthony Martial was named winner last year, but Rashford could not repeat his United team-mate’s feat, with Kingsley Coman, also of Bayern Munich, rounding off the top three.
Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi and Tottenham star Dele Alli were also on the shortlist, but 19-year-old Sanches finished top of the pile having helped Portugal win Euro 2016.
“I’m beaming, this award has a global significance,” Sanches, who United missed out on signing, told Tuttosport.
“But I am down to earth, I have much to learn mainly from my fantastic team-mates such as Vidal, Xabi, Tiago and Kimmich. I dedicate the Golden Boy to my family. The Champions League? Bayern will win, there is no debate: we are the strongest team on the planet.”
