Scunthorpe v Portsmouth preview

Scunthorpe pair David Mirfin and David Syers could both face late fitness tests ahead of the visit of Portsmouth.

Centre-half Mirfin and midfielder Syers are struggling with slight groin injuries, but boss Russ Wilcox is expecting them to play some part at the weekend.

Striker Deon Burton remains sidelined with a calf problem and skipper Michael Collins has joined AFC Wimbledon on loan until the end of the season.

Wilcox has no other new injury or suspension worries as the Iron, without defeat since he took charge at the end of November, bid to extend their unbeaten run to 16 matches.

Portsmouth are set to hand Toumani Diagouraga a debut when they face Scunthorpe.

The Brentford midfielder arrived at Fratton Park on a one-month loan deal earlier this week and he is available to make his Pompey bow against the Iron.

But one player who may not make the trip is winger Andy Barcham whose wife is due to give birth to their first child on Saturday.

Pompey have lost just two of their last 10 matches to move seven points clear of the Sky Bet League Two drop zone, but victory over Scunthorpe would be the the first time they have recorded back-to-back league wins this season.

Scunthorpe defender Paul Reid is doubtful for the home midweek tie.

Reid turned his ankle during the weekend defeat at Crewe and although he lasted the full 90 minutes the Iron skipper may miss out.

Manager Brian Laws will assess Reid’s fitness before deciding whether to recall fellow centre-half David Mirfin alongside Niall Canavan.

Mirfin has only recently returned from a two-month lay-off due to a knee injury.

Laws, who has no other new injury or suspension worries, is expected to retain Akpo Sodje and Karl Hawley up front.

Sodje is searching for his first goal since joining the Iron in early January, three games ago.

Midfielder Josh Walker returned to the substitutes’ bench on Saturday following an eight-game absence due to an ankle injury and illness and is pushing for his first appearance since late November.

Ricardo Rocha and David Connolly are injury doubts for struggling Portsmouth.

Defender Rocha came off during the first half of the 3-2 defeat by Colchester on Saturday with an ankle knock and striker Connolly had to be withdrawn at the interval after tweaking his hamstring.

Caretaker boss Guy Whittingham will see his threadbare squad reduced to just 15 senior players if the experienced duo are ruled out.

Gabor Gyepes is poised to return at centre-half while Liam Walker could replace Connolly in the starting line-up after coming on for the Irishman at the weekend.

Pompey have lost their last seven League One matches and are now just two points ahead of bottom club Hartlepool.

Scunthorpe boss Alan Knill could be without striker Chris Dagnall.

The former Rochdale forward picked up a knock to his hip in last week’s 5-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest and is unlikely to recover.

He joins Josh Wright (back), Andy Hughes (stomach strain) and Matt Godden (groin) on the treatment table.

Defender Cliff Byrne and midfielder Garry Thompson remain long-term absentees but Knill has no other major concerns.

Knill said: “Cliff has done some light training, but Garry only had his operation the other week.

“It will be a long way back for them both. But now with a month or so off they have the time to get themselves right for the start of next season.”

Dave Kitson is pushing to return for Portsmouth.

The striker has missed the last two matches with a rib injury but is being considered for a place in the squad.

Midfielder Liam Lawrence returned from a leg injury as a substitute during the 1-0 defeat by Norwich on Monday night.

He could be handed a start in place of full-back Carl Dickinson, who deputised in midfield against the Canaries.

Ritchie de Laet, Joel Ward (both calf) and Hermann Hreidarsson (knee) have been playing on despite carrying knocks recently and should continue.

Defender Ricardo Rocha is still suspended for Pompey, who are limping towards the finish line without a win in their last seven outings.
