Sergio Romero’s wife elaborates on Manchester United exit situation

Sergio Romero TEAMtalk

Sergio Romero’s wife has clarified her outburst on Tuesday after the Manchester United goalkeeper’s transfer was blocked.

Romero’s wife Eliana Guercio took to Instagram to vent her frustration at the Old Trafford club.

Romero has fallen down the pecking order with the return of Dean Henderson to the club and he was searching for a way out.

Everton are understood to have made an approach for the 33-year-old, but it’s believed United rebuffed the move.

Instead Everton scrambled to bring in support for Jordan Pickford and eventually signed Robin Olsen on loan from Roma.

Guercio wrote: “Sergio Romero worked hard for this club. Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him.

“He helped the team reach 4 finals/semi finals and then was left on the bench only to lose them all.

“It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. RESPECT FOR ONCE!!!”

And now Guercio has elaborated on her comments and said she is “sad” he was not given the opportunity to move clubs.

She said: “It was a very stressful day for us. I have to say that I am sad, very sad on one and happy on the other hand.

“I am sad because Sergio deserved the opportunity to go to another club, he has shown what he can do and he worked every day.

“Right now he is training, just like he has been every day since he was in Argentina because he is a professional.

“He loves what he does and gives his all every day. I have known ever since I met about his passion and his work and his family obviously.”

The exit trigger for Romero

Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero Man Utd

The Argentine has been at United since 2015, when he arrived from Sampdoria. He has been a reliable back-up goalkeeper to David De Gea, rarely letting United down when called upon.

Romero enjoyed a run of games in the Europa League last season. He had played all but two games in the competition up to the semi final, including their quarter-final win over Copenhagen.

The Argentine therefore expected to keep his place for their showdown with Sevilla. However, Ole Gunner Solksjaer instead opted for De Gea; the Spaniard having played just once in the competition prior to that.

Romero was said to be ‘heartbroken’ at missing out. According to The Sun, that was the moment Romero started to look for move away.

United went on to lose 2-1 to Sevilla, who then beat Inter Milan in the final.
