Luke Shaw: Not yet ready to return for Manchester United

Luke Shaw is “ahead in his rehabilitation” from a double leg break, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed.

Shaw suffered the injury in United’s Champions League tie against PSV Eindhoven in September, and there were initial fears that he may not return in time to stake a claim for a place in England’s Euro 2016 squad.

Van Gaal, however, is cautiously optimistic that the 20-year-old could return ahead of schedule, though he does not expect it to be by much.

“Shaw was with his surgeon and everything is going well,” Van Gaal said.

“His bone is growing and that is very positive, but he needs time.”

Asked if he thought Shaw would return earlier than initially expected, Van Gaal said: “Yes, but when I say that then everybody thinks he is coming back within three months, but it is not like that, you cannot say that.

“At this moment he is ahead in his rehabilitation, but there are also weeks when he is slow.

“At the end, it is mostly the same time.”
